Follow all procedures/protocols in the common practices manual

Review health records submitted by parents and physicians

Identify a core team at each school to work with parents and the student to establish a prevention plan

Careful monitoring of children, especially in the younger grades

Provide allergen-free areas for children to eat

Place signs in areas that are peanut-free (or other allergen free)

Assure that all staff who interact with the student on a regular basis understands allergy, can recognize symptoms, knows what to do in an emergency, and works with other staff to eliminate the use of food and other allergens in the student’s meals, educational tools, arts and crafts projects, or incentives

Share care plans of those students with prescribed epinephrine with all staff members involved in the care of the child (to include playground supervisors, dietary, and bus drivers)

Provide training on the epinephrine auto-injector and keep a list of those trained to use it

Enforce no eating policy on school buses

Train staff who may serve food to children on terms commonly used in labeling food

Inform parents that the safest way to prevent allergic food reactions for at risk students is for the student to eat only specially prepared food from home. The majority of food suppliers cannot guarantee that packaged items are absolutely free of small traces of allergens

Enforce rules on not sharing food or eating utensils with other students

Train students to wash their hands before and after eating and handling food

Do not permit parents or staff members to bring home-prepared foods to share with students

Do not give food to at-risk students if not absolutely sure of the ingredients

Share a copy of the Emergency Care Plan (ECP) with those individuals taking students away from campus

Provide emergency response procedures to administer epinephrine, summon EMS, and notify parents. Children who have been given epinephrine must be transported to a hospital even if symptoms resolve
