The Sumner School District has established boundaries for each high school, and students are expected to attend the designated high school based on the location of their residence and the boundary lines. The School District does not have an open enrollment policy. Students wishing to attend a school other than his or her resident high school, must apply for a waiver through the Sumner School District Waiver office. This applies to 8th grade students selecting a non-resident high school for his or her 9th grade year.

Sumner School District students entering 9th grade are eligible for any level of competition at the high school he or she attends by meeting the following requirements:

  • The student currently meets all other Sumner School District  eligibility requirements in the Athletic & Activity Eligibility Form.
  • The student currently meet all WIAA eligibility requirements, including those listed in the Athletic & Activity Eligibility Form.
  • It is the student's resident high school as determined by the Sumner School District School Attendance Boundaries.
  • The student currently meets the Sumner School District Extra-Curricular Academic Requirement by passing all classes and achieving a 2.0 GPA.

If the student has transferred high schools within the District or attending a non-resident high school with an in-district waiver, one of the following requirements must be met:

blue star bullet Students whose transfer is based on a change of residence, due to a relocation of and with the entire family unit to a different residence, and preceded by termination of all occupancy of their previous residence, meet the requirement for athletic eligibility at the varsity level
blue star bullet Student attended the transfer high school for one calendar year (during which time they are eligible, if they meet all other requirements, for sub-varsity competition)
blue star bullet Student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) reside in different abodes as the result of a divorce or court appointed separation are allowed one (1) transfer between parents or guardians after entering the 9th grade
blue star bullet For students transferring high schools, the student was granted eligibility by the designated WIAA eligibility committee.
blue star bullet 9th grade in-district waiver students attending a non-resident high school must be granted a hardship appeal to lift the varsity eligibility restrictions
