At this time there have been 4 days of school closure due to weather. The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up in May.
- May 25 and May 29: SCHOOL DAYs for all students K-12
The additional 2 make-up days have not yet been scheduled.
Skylert Notifications
The District and all schools now have capability to send notifications about attendance, general messages and emergency alerts by phone, e-mail or text messages. All families should log on to Family Access to update their contact information and select preferred messages. Families will choose the phone number to which general and emergency messages will be sent (home, work or cell phone), with additional options for the message to also be sent by e-mail or text.
Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather brings road and driving conditions that might result in school delays or closures. Safety for your child is our primary concern. When winter weather impacts specific areas of the district, Limited Bus Transportation service areas may be announced. We try to make information available about school closure or changes to the school schedule by 5 a.m. Families should remember to check the Web site or call the District Hotline at 891.6001 for updated information about school operations.
From the Principals' Desk
Dear Sumner Middle School Families:
With the wild weather we experienced in January, the month has passed by rather quickly. As February begins, we will end the first semester and see second semester begin on February 7. Here at SMS, this only affects 8th graders as the semester marks the switch between PNW and Skills for Life classes.
There is quite a bit happening at SMS right now, and there are many opportunities for your children to get involved. Basketball is starting up, and all boys interested in playing are encouraged to turn out. Likewise, we’d love to see as many girls as possible get involved in soccer this year! In addition to other clubs that have been ongoing, we have a new Art Club starting up and Mr. Grasley has decided to start the Photography Club once again.
Students involved in ASB are busy planning for our second Spirit Week scheduled for February 13-16. We also have students who volunteered to be a part of small groups to keep the Rachel’s Challenge “spark” ignited. For the month of February, this group of students will be emphasizing Rachel Scott’s challenge to “look for the best in others” in an effort to show others they belong.
This year the middle schools are piloting the standards-based report card. As with most pilots we have learned much from this year’s work. In an effort to hear from you or answer any questions you might have, we are hosting a “Standards-Based Grading Parent Night” on February 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. We had previously scheduled an event for January 18, but the aforementioned weather canceled those plans.
Please remember we are just a phone call or e-mail away. Contact us if you need anything.
