Directions

Application Deadline February 24, 2012 by 3:00 p.m.

1.

A minimum of two letters of recommendation are required: one from a faculty/staff member at SHS and one from someone outside the Sumner School District (i.e.: scout leader, work supervisor, religious leader, etc.). Letter of Recommendation form is available in the Guidance Office. Allow at least two weeks when requesting a letter. Do not wait until the last minute to ask someone to write a letter for you.

2.

Review the scholarship requirements for each scholarship to determine your eligibility.  Read the scholarship descriptions carefully as some scholarships require separate applications.  Mark all scholarships you are interested in being considered for on the Interest Form located at the end of the application.  This form must be turned in to the Guidance Office when you turn in your completed applications.

3.

Type or word-process all applications. REMINDER: The Standard Application form is available online and can be completed on and printed directly from any computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Word. The Web address is on the front of this booklet.
Print each page as you complete it, as you cannot save the completed form.

4.

Staple all forms together (no paper clips, folders, covers, sleeves, binders, etc.) in the following order:

  • Scholarship Interest Form
  • Application Form
  • Two letters of recommendation (refer to number 1 above)
  • Transcript reflecting grades through first semester of your senior year
  • ACT or SAT scores

5.

Submit six completed application packets to the SHS Guidance Office no later than Friday, February 24 by 3:00 p.m.  NO late applications will be accepted.
Last-minute computer malfunctions is no excuse, plan ahead!

Scholarship recipients will be notified in mid- to late May.  Due to the volume of applications, it is not possible to notify students who applied but were not selected, for a scholarship.  All recipients of scholarships will be invited to the Senior Awards Night on May 24, 2012.  Students are welcome to see the Guidance Office secretary if they have any questions during the process.

Community Scholarship Tips and Information

Read the scholarship descriptions carefully to help you understand which scholarships you are eligible for.  Attention to the details of the scholarship will also help identify which scholarships require a separate application that is requested through the Sumner High School Guidance Office.

Scholarship donors expect a neat and complete application.  The donors have often devoted many hours toward fund raising to finance their scholarship and they expect to see quality work from the applicant when completing the scholarship application.  Following are important guidelines for completing your application:

1.

Proofread your application for spelling and grammatical errors.  Sloppy presentation tells the people reading your application that you are not presenting your best work and may not truly be interested in their help in partnering with you to help fund your education.  It is certainly acceptable to be imaginative and creative.  At the same time, don’t forget the basics.  Take time to be sure your spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc., are correct.  While it is an excellent idea to allow another person to review your statement, the basic ideas and writing must be your own.

2.

Be careful not to use text-speak and abbreviations for words.  The committees that review applications are looking for well written statements that they do not have to decipher or guess at the intent.

3.

The quality of your Statement of Educational and Career Goals is of the utmost importance.  Do not state that your goal is to graduate from high school.  It is assumed from your application that you plan to graduate. Tell the reader why you are going to college and how that education will help you achieve your goals and what they are.  State your plans for employment and post high school education.

4.

Now is your time to brag a little. The readers do not know you and what your writing is what they will judge you on. Tell them about what a great choice you are for their scholarship.  Use your answers and information to paint a picture of who you are and how their support would be a wise investment in your future.

5.

Do not wait until the last minute.  The stress of wondering if you will meet a deadline is unhealthy and unnecessary.  No late applications will be accepted, even if caused by a computer malfunctions.
Plan ahead.  Incomplete applications will not be considered by committees and donors.

Sumner High School adheres to a philosophy of recognizing as many deserving seniors as possible.  There are more deserving students than there are available scholarships; therefore, the attempt is made to distribute scholarships to the greatest number of qualified applicants.

Some scholarship donors will request an interview.  Applicants will be notified through the Guidance Office indicating the time and location of these interviews.

In most cases, scholarships are not granted solely on financial need.

All students in need of financial aid for college attendance should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.   Register now for the PIN that is required to apply for the FAFSA.  You will also need to complete forms required by the specific college/institution.  For FAFSA assistance be sure to attend our Financial Aid Night on January 9, 2012, at Sumner High School.

Local scholarships are usually for one year only and are not renewable.  Recipients of scholarships must use the money in the academic year following their graduation and preferably be enrolled throughout that following year.

Scholarship funds are mailed to the Financial Aid Office of the college/institution indicated on the recipient’s acceptance card.  If the recipient changes his/her choice of institution or fails to enroll, the scholarship donor must be notified.

Scholarship funds may be used for any program administered by the educational institutions unless otherwise stated.

Most scholarships are announced at the annual Senior Awards Night. Recipients will be invited to attend this reception, which will be held May 24, 2012, in the Sumner High School Performing Arts Center.

We do our best to post accurate and up-to-date information in the Community Scholarship.  Occasionally, actual awards may vary- either higher or lower- than the amounts stated.

Recipients will be notified how to receive their funds either through the donor directly or through the Guidance Office.  All recipients will receive a letter from the Guidance Office encouraging them to immediately write a thank you note.  Thank you notes must be completed and mailed to the donor
no later than June 8, 2012.
