AP and IB
Discussions at Options Night will also include Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.

Apella (Advisory)
Apella is designed to provide curriculum, information and experiences that will prepare students for success during and following high school.  For a successful transition to life after graduation, students will learn to set and achieve goals for today and tomorrow, and to assume ownership and involvement in their educational choices.  Students will also be using Apella to craft a High School and Beyond Plan, which is a graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2008 and a piece of the Culminating Project.                                                   ASVAB Testing
Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) at Sumner High School.  This test aids in determining aptitude and interests for hundreds of career possibilities in both civilian jobs and military positions.   The ASVAB is offered at Sumner High School in both the fall and spring semester.

Beyond High School
Offered to all high school students and their parents every fall,  Beyond High School brings representatives from nearly every 4-year and 2-year college to either Bonney Lake or Sumner High School in alternating years.  Vocational and Technical schools and Armed Service recruiters are in attendance, as well as personnel from other career alternatives after high school.  Students and parents can attend up to four different interest sessions during this event, in addition to visiting the walk-around fair exhibitors.

Boys & Girls State
See a U.S. History teacher or counselor regarding the social studies department selection of students for Boys’ State and Girls’ State Congress held each summer.  The local Rotary Club and the Sumner Teachers Association pay for two women and two men to attend.  Girls’ State is the second week in June and Boys’ State is the third week in June.  Both are held at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.  The American Legion hosts the conference so that 400+ students can act out the legislative process involved in proposing and enacting laws that are crucial to Washington State.

Comprehensive Guidance
Comprehensive Guidance focuses on student academic achievement, career development and personal/social development (ASCA). One way that we implement Comprehensive Guidance into our school is through our Advisory system. In Advisory/Apella students are working on their Culminating Project/Portfolio. Advisory/Apella extends throughout their high school career.

The Culminating Portfolio is comprised of four tabs:

1. Senior Project

2. Educational Plan (13th Year plan)

3. Growth Over Time

4. Citizenship

This is a Washington State requirement.

College Visitations
College admissions representatives visit our campus during first semester each year.  It’s never too early to visit a college campus on your own.  Check out the Junior/Senior scholarship file in Guidance for information on the college of your choice.

Coordination of Services for Students with Disabilities
Post-Secondary and college accommodations planning for students with disabilities.  Available by requesting an appointment with the school psychologist.

Education Week
Education Week is in July at Central Washington University.  Education Week provides information and
encouragement for students considering the teaching profession.  Watch for advertising through the Guidance Office when information is available in the spring, and remember to apply early.

Field Trips
A variety of career exploration field trips are offered each year, including technical college visitations and nontraditional trades programs for girls.

Freshman & Sophomore Introduction
This is a class presentation in early September for freshmen and sophomores to learn about the Guidance Office and how it can be of help to them.  This visit also talks about the requirements over the next four years and gives a list of dates of future workshops that may be of interest to freshmen.

Internships/Pre-Apprenticeships, Apprenticeships
The Guidance Office and Career Center help connect students with a variety of internship and apprenticeship programs.   Most of these programs are offered during the summer of a student’s junior year.  Many programs are paid and offer high school credit.  Stop by the Guidance Office or Career Center to see what internships and apprenticeships will be offered this year at SHS.

Job Preparation and Portfolio Assistance
The Career Center staff offers assistance with job applications, cover letters, resumes, available job opportunities, community service, job shadow opportunities, and interviewing skills.

Medical Rotation
This course is offered at Franklin Pierce High School, by application.  Students are responsible for their own transportation.  Periods 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 all year (3 Credits).  This year-long program offers qualified seniors an opportunity to observe a variety of medical careers in settings such as local hospitals, health care facilities and offices. Students will become familiar with as many different phases of health care as possible, including; Surgery, Veterinarian, Pharmacy,
Nursery, Children’s Therapy Unit, Labor & Delivery, Emergency Room Chiropractor, and Laboratory.

Options Night
This is an information session for parents and students.  This event will include information on the following programs:

Paying For College Night
This is the financial aid workshop that is designed for both parents and students. As such, it is held in the evening and includes instructions on how to fill in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.  Paying for College Night will be held in January 2008, at the high school.

You may download a FAFSA and bring it to the meeting with you by going online to the Web site:  www.fafsa.ed.gov

PSAT/ SAT Training
Learning the strategies to taking a standardize test can help to improve a student’s score. The Guidance Office offers a two period length training session for the PSAT. This session is offered in October and is held just a short time before the PSAT is taken. Juniors most often take the PSAT, but there are usually some spots available for sophomores as well. In addition, the techniques learned in the training session can be very helpful when the SAT or ACT is taken later in the year.

Registration Advisories
Students will be guided by advisory teachers each time they select classes and register for the next semester.  Attention is paid to graduation requirements, college prep courses, and courses which provide the skills for entry into apprenticeships or the work force.

Running Start
This is a year-long program that allows juniors and seniors to enroll in courses at community or technical colleges either on a full-time or a part-time basis.  Registration must be completed the previous spring prior to beginning classes. Eligibility is based on a placement test given by the colleges.  Both college credit and high school credit is earned for courses taken at the college. Although the District pays tuition, the student is responsible for books, fees, and transportation. Students interested should attend a Running Start Orientation held in March for sophomores. Classes begin in autumn of either a student’s junior or senior year.

Scholarships, Senior Spotlight/Community Scholarship Application
The “Senior SpotLight” is printed every 4 weeks and notifies students of both college visits and scholarships available.  A copy is given to each of the senior teachers for posting. Students may pick up copies of future publications in Guidance. The Community Scholarship Application allows seniors to complete just one application to apply for over 40 local scholarships that only Sumner High School students will be awarded (over $50,000.00 each year).

Scholarships:  Junior FYI
The “Junior FYI” is printed every four weeks and notifies students of both college visits and scholarships available.  A copy is given to all junior teachers to post.  Students may pick up their own copy in the Guidance Office.

Senior College Admission and financial aid information
The advisory curriculum in October provides information on the college admission process, including the common application for 4-year private schools, deadlines, and tips on how to write college essays.

Have questions about how to pay for your education after high school?   Information is provided in advisory curriculum during  December.  Parents are invited to a financial aid follow-up workshop in January.

Work Authorization Forms
If your student is under 18 and working, make sure he or she obtains a parent/school authorization form from his/her employer and brings it to the Career Center.  There is a 24-hour minimum turn-around for processing.  For information about state minor labor laws go to www.lni.wa.gov/svs/workstandards

Work-Based Learning
Work-based learning is a learning experience that connects knowledge and skills obtained in the classroom to those needed outside the classroom.

Work-based learning comprises a range of activities and instructional strategies designed to assist students in developing or fulfilling their individual educational and/or career plans.  Some examples include job shadowing, service learning, applied learning, contextual learning, structured field trips, and school based enterprises.  Contact the WBL Coordinator for more information.
