Cell Phone Policy
Students may use cell phones and other electronic devices only before and after school, and during their assigned lunch period. Cell phone usage is not permitted during passing time; they must be turned off and stored. Any cell phone or other devices seen, heard, or being used during instructional/class time will be confiscated, and the situation will be addressed with appropriate disciplinary action. Confiscated items will be released only to the parents/guardian.

Electronic devices include, but are not limited to iPods, MP3, palms, headphones, Bluetooth earpieces, etc. Calculators being used for anything other than calculation will be considered an electronic device. The school will not assume responsibility if electronic devices are damaged, lost or stolen at any time. The school will not be able to investigate damage, lost, or stolen personal electronic devices.

Emergency Preparedness at School
The Sumner School District works in partnership with local law enforcement, public safety and county emergency management to prepare for emergency conditions in our schools. Each school has developed a comprehensive plan for responding to a variety of natural disasters and hazardous situations including earthquake, lahar, fire, bomb threat, and hazardous materials incidents.

Our system for managing school emergency situations provides students, staff and parents with a plan and a sense of security. Student safety is our focus and guides our decisions. Staff members have been assigned specific tasks they are responsible for during an emergency situation. Exhibiting leadership during a school evacuation or providing first aid are as important as communicating information to parents and organizing student relocation centers.

Communication tips for families during an emergency

  • Please be assured — we will communicate with you as quickly as possible.
  • Be patient — your child’s safety is our first priority!
  • Please don’t call the school; it jams the phone lines.
  • Check the web site or call the Emergency Hotline (253) 891-6001 for updates.

How families can help during an emergency:

  • Take care not to become part of the problem by rushing to the school. More traffic just makes it difficult for emergency response teams.
  • Keep emergency cards up-to-date including names of people authorized to pick up your children.
  • All adults who are picking up children should remember to always bring photo identification.

Dress Code
Appropriate attire is expected at all times while on school grounds and at all school sponsored activities.

  • Students must remove all headwear while in the buildings. Headwear includes hats, hoods, sweatbands, bandanas and headwraps. Appropriate headwear may be worn for after school events.
  • Clothing must cover stomachs, backs, shoulders (4 fingers wide), and chests; No visible cleavage; No tank-tops
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses may appear no shorter than three (3) inches above the top of the knee.
  • Footwear must be worn at all times appropriate to the activity. Strapless shoes and high heels are discouraged for safety reasons.
  • All dress requirements must be met in all positions (sitting, standing, bending, reaching) while attending school.
  • Undergarments must be covered.
  • Holes, tears, mesh or other see through materials in garments may not be in areas that clothing is required to cover.
  • Clothing that promotes drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, violence, is sexually suggestive, displays inappropriate pictures or writing, or is worn in a manner identified as gang related is prohibited. Sleep/beach wear is not appropriate school dress.
  • Jewelry that can pose a safety hazard is prohibited.
  • Wearing of sunglasses is not permitted in the school building.

1st period tardies
It is vital to a good education that students are in class on time. A student will be marked tardy if he/she arrives to class/workstation after the final tardy bell 7:35 am (9:05 am on Wednesday). There are no excused tardies unless the student has been at a medical appointment. We understand that there will be times when a student arrives late to school for unforeseeable reasons. Therefore, students will be given a warning on their first tardy to school. Discipline will then incur after that Sumner High School point. Thank you for your help and support with your students education.
