2009-10 Sumner High School Band Program Members and Families:

Welcome to the 2009-10 school-year!  We hope you’ve had a great summer.  First, we’d once again like to thank those students and parents who were a part of our 19th Annual Sumner HS Summer Marching Band that performed at the Cedar Ridge July 4th Parade, the West Seattle and Des Moines Parades, the Seattle Seafair Torchlight Parade, the White Rock, B.C. Spirit of the Sea Festival Parade, and the Auburn Good ‘Ol Days Parade.  These students did a great job representing our program and our school district and had a lot of fun. 

We’ve got some great things to look forward to this school year, including field shows and parades, concerts and competitions,  and several trips, so we’ll be keeping busy as usual.  We’ll be starting quickly again this fall, with our first performances coming the first week of school.  As always, we will continue our commitment to a quality music education in a fun and challenging environment.  Being in the Sumner HS Band Program is unique in that it exists during the school day as well as before and after school and even on weekends, which for new members can be quite a change.  Over the course of the upcoming school year, you’ll be seen and heard by many thousands of people, from the Puyallup Fair, UW, and the Holiday Parades in the fall, to Oregon, the Daffodil Parades, and Wenatchee in the Spring.   It will be a great year!

We normally have some SHS Band activities prior to the start of school, but this year it’s going to be a little different than in the past.  We’ve got a lot to do but we’re confident we’ll be ready for our early performances.   We’ve found that by having pre-season rehearsals it helps to ease the transition once everything gets started for real in September.  We hope you can make it for the initial meetings and our first-ever “midnight madness” overnight rehearsal starting at 11:59PM Friday August 28th, as well as the annual student-parent meeting on Monday August 31st and for the rest of the pre-season activities listed on the back of this letter.   New students - we are ordering special black marching shoes for everyone, so to get them in time for our first performance I need all of you needing shoes to call me at the Band Office or e-mail me with your shoe size by August 20th (phone number and e-mail address is above).  The cost will remain $40 per pair and will need to be collected when the shoes arrive and are picked-up prior to our performances on September 11th.

We’re really looking forward to working during the 2009-10 school year with the outstanding students and their families that make up the Sumner HS Band Program.
