Highly Capable Program
2010-2011 Nominations
Each school year, Sumner School District accepts nominations of students in grades 2-7 whose educational needs might be best served by Sumner’s Highly Capable Program. Sumner serves students identified as highly capable in grades 3-5 in a self-contained “all day” program housed at Daffodil Valley Elementary. Middle school students attend Lakeridge or Sumner Middle school. For the 2010-2011 school year, students in grades 6 and 7 will attend Lakeridge Middle school. Students in grade 8 will attend Sumner Middle school. The middle school Highly Capable Program includes social studies, language arts, math and science.

A Fabulous Fall Festival
Thank you to all of our PTA board members, volunteers and participants at our Fall Festival on the evening of October 24. Thanks also to our very talented cake bakers and decorators!! As always they are a BIG HIT with everyone! All enjoyed our new “Trunk or Treat” event and we encourage you to think about how you could participate next year.
6th Annual McAlder Marathon
One of our goals of McAlder is to continue learning about healthy living and positive actions. In conjunction with this, we are taking part in a “marathon” to help get kids active! Our school marathon is structured much like The Seattle Kids Marathon. However, unlike the Seattle Marathon, ours will run throughout the entire school year.
Students will have the opportunity to walk our school track to earn “miles” towards the marathon goal. They will also be able to read and record books read at home or school. And they will learn to help others by completing “do rights” (good deeds). Incentives will be given for accomplishing these activities. A culminating event will take place in May to celebrate our successes by having a school-wide McAlder Marathon.
In order to complete all necessary components of the McAlder Marathon, students are to complete the following:
- Walk/Run 26.2 miles, approximately 80 laps around the school track. Students may keep track of their laps at school or at home! The last 1.2 miles will be completed at our McAlder Marathon Celebration in May.
- Read and record 13 books
- Carry out 13 “Do Rights!” (good deeds)
