Highly Capable Program Nominations
Each school year, Sumner School District accepts nominations of students in grades 2-5 whose educational needs might be best served by the District’s Highly Capable Program.
Students identified as highly capable in grades 3-5 are served in a self-contained “all day” program housed at Daffodil Valley Elementary. At the middle school level, students attend Lakeridge Middle School and their program includes social studies, language arts, math and science.
Nomination Period: January 4 – 31, 2012
Nomination forms are available at all elementary and middle schools and online.

Kindergarten Registration Information
The Sumner School District offers full-time and part-time kindergarten classes. Part-time students attend school all day on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternating Wednesdays (red kindergarten) OR all day on Thursdays, Fridays and alternating Wednesdays (blue kindergarten).
Some elementary schools offer a tuition-based, full-time program on a space available basis. Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade.
Full-time Kindergarten Rates
Registration Deposit (applied to June tuition): $100
Full Pay Monthly Tuition: $325
All children enrolling for kindergarten for the coming school year must be five years old by August 31, prior to the start of school. When registering a child for school, families should bring:
- Proof of child’s birth date (birth or hospital certificate, passport);
- Immunization information and child’s health history; and
- Names and phone numbers of parents, physician, and an emergency contact.
Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information, or download a packet from the District Web site. Completed registration forms should be returned to the neighborhood school.

Skylert Notifications
The District and all schools now have capability to send notifications about attendance, general messages and emergency alerts by phone, e-mail or text messages. All families should log on to Family Access to update their contact information and select preferred messages. Families will choose the phone number to which general and emergency messages will be sent (home, work or cell phone), with additional options for the message to also be sent by e-mail or text.
Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather brings road and driving conditions that might result in school delays or closures. Safety for your child is our primary concern. When winter weather impacts specific areas of the district, Limited Bus Transportation service areas may be announced. We try to make information available about school closure or changes to the school schedule by 5 a.m. Families should remember to check the Web site or call the District Hotline at 891.6001 for updated information about school operations.
From the Principal's Desk
Getting involved with your child’s education is a great way to show your kids you take an interest in their education and it sends a positive message that you consider school worthwhile. One way of getting involved in your child’s education is to volunteer. If you have a flexible schedule and have time during the day, it’s never too late to jump in and lend a hand! You can contact the school or your child’s teacher to see if there’s a specific need. If your schedule won’t allow you to volunteer at school, continue working with your child at home on their math facts, homework and reading. Stay involved! The vision at Liberty Ridge is, “Together We Succeed; no exceptions, no excuses!” Together means all of us being involved in the success of our students – staff, community members and parents. Thank you for continuing to help us achieve our vision and help every child experience success.
MAP Testing is underway and students are giving their best effort! Our preliminary data is showing that students at every grade level are making growth! When we finish testing in February, I’ll have more detailed data to share with you in March. Stay tuned for the final results and be ready to celebrate!
Thank you for attending the Liberty Ridge Science Fair! Students worked hard to design experiments and work through the scientific process. The topics this year ranged from whether frozen candles burned longer than candles at room temperature to what type of paper would make an airplane fly farther. Students were eager and ready to present their project to fellow students and visitors. We’d like to wish all of those students entering the District Science Fair on February 4 good luck!
Finally, I need your help with the parking lot before and after school. We would all agree that safety is critical when it comes to moving cars and children. Please drive slowly through the parking lot and watch carefully all around you, even when backing out of a parking space. Please use the crosswalk or load or unload your child quickly in the pick-up zone to allow other traffic in and out. Please do not pick up students in the turn-around circle in front of the bus loop. Finally, the orange cones designate “no parking” areas. Thanks for your help!
Make Regular Attendance a Priority
Regular attendance is critical to the academic success of your child. Attendance patterns are formed early in life. Children who develop good attendance habits in the early grades will be more likely to continue them throughout his or her school career. Parents who make regular school attendance a priority are helping their child learn responsibility, another important lesson for a successful life. When students miss school, they miss out on active learning experiences and the opportunity to ask questions. Let your child know that you expect them to attend school everyday. Set a time for homework every evening to avoid the morning excuse of, “ I don’t feel good.” Finally, get involved with our school. When your child sees you involved, he or she will understand school is important!
Sincerely,
Laurie Dent
Principal
