hand delivered progress report

Progress Reports Hand Carried Home
Your student will hand carry home his or her Progress Report at the end of this week. You may have to ask for it. You may have to go snooping about in a backpack. You may have to check pockets. And, perhaps, you may even have to give us a telephone call next week to let us know it could not be located. Just do not tell us the dog ate it. Provide us with a creative story and we will make certain you get a second copy.

Student-Led Conferences
Schedule Early for Best Date and Time Selection

Your Hawk has been working diligently to prepare for a conference with you. A priority goal for the Sumner School District Board of Directors has been to implement individual parent/student/educator conferences for our middle school students. This will be a special time for your child to share with you his or her portfolio containing self-assessment materials, standardized test results, goals identified, and plans to be implemented for continued success and improvement.

Lakeridge will be using a Web-based application called pickAtime to schedule parent/teacher conferences.

With Internet access, you will be able schedule your conference, print the schedule, and have an e-mail reminder of the appointment sent to you. To schedule your conference, simply click on this scheduling link or click the one on the Lakeridge Web site.

https://www.pickatime.com/client?ven=11602978.

This program is easy to use and can be accessed at your convenience beginning November 2, 2009. You will be able to access this program to schedule your conference. Should you later need to change the date or time, you will be able to do that also. However, as time passes, more and more time slots will be filled by other parents.

If you do not have Internet access, please contact school secretary Carol Pizano at 253-891-5118 to schedule your conference beginning November 4.

Highly Capable Program 2010-2011 Nominations
Each school year, Sumner School District accepts nominations of students in grades 2-7 whose educational needs might be best served by Sumner’s Highly Capable Program. Sumner serves students identified as highly capable in grades 3-5 in a self-contained “all day” program housed at Daffodil Valley Elementary. Middle school students attend Lakeridge or Sumner Middle school. For the 2010-2011 school year, students in grades 6 and 7 will attend Lakeridge Middle school. Students in grade 8 will attend Sumner Middle school. The middle school Highly Capable Program includes social studies, language arts, math and science.

Nomination forms will be available at all elementary and middle schools beginning Monday, November 2. Forms will also be available online at http://www.sumnersd.org/studentfamilyservices/specialservices/pages/gifted.html.

Emergency Preparedness at School
The Sumner School District works in partnership with local law enforcement, public safety and county emergency management to prepare for emergency conditions in our schools. Each school has developed a comprehensive plan for responding to a variety of natural disasters and hazardous situations including earthquake, lahar, fire, bomb threat, and hazardous materials incidents.
Our system for managing school emergency situations provides students, staff and parents with a plan and a sense of security. Student safety is our focus and guides our decisions. Staff members have been assigned specific tasks they are responsible for during an emergency situation. Exhibiting leadership during a school evacuation and providing first aid are as important as communicating information to parents and organizing student relocation centers.

Communications tips for families during an emergency
Please be assured – we will communicate with you as quickly as possible.
Be patient – your child’s safety is our first priority!
Please don’t call the school; it jams the phone lines.
Check the Web site or call the Emergency Hotline (253) 891.6001 for updates.

How families can help during an emergency
Take care not to become part of the problem by rushing to the school. More traffic just makes it difficult for emergency response teams.
Keep emergency cards up-to-date with correct phone numbers and names of people authorized to pick up your children.
All adults who are picking up children should remember to always bring photo identification.
