Cadet Band II
Cadet Band II is for 7th grade students just getting started in the band program. It is also for second year band students who have chosen to switch to a new instrument. This class will work to progress at a fast pace, with the goal of participating in the LMS Marching Band in the spring, also to play in the Spring Concert, combined with Cadet Band I (if progress allows). Throughout the school year we will focus on developing the following band skills: reading music, individual instrument playing, marching band, group participation and performance, as well as good citizenship skills.
In getting off to a good start, you will need:
- band instrument (in good working condition)
- your Hawk Planner
- pencil
- band book: “Essential Elements 2000 book One”
if you don’t have a book by Sept. 11, you can order yours from Mr. O
Percussion books $14.00, all other books $10.00

Getting your instrument
Most students rent an instrument from a local music store. There are several reasons I would recommend this option, including: reliable, high quality instruments, plus good & local repair service & support. Also, “rent-to-own plan” is a great option.
Getting your instrument from a family member or relative…can be a great deal, but make sure to have it checked by a music store with instrument repair service (such as: Ted Brown Music, on Tacoma Mall Blvd, 1-800-562-8938).
I would strongly suggest NOT getting an instrument from “big box” stores, as these instruments are cheaply made and have a record of needing very expensive repair bills to keep them in working order. Likewise, I would be cautious about purchasing “amazing deals” off the Internet. While some large stores do offer very good prices on new quality instruments, many used instruments for sale could be of low quality and soon in need of (costly) repair.
Rental Night is Thursday, Sept. 10, 4-7pm @ Mountain View Middle School
For: students who need an instrument.
Instruments will be available for rent from Ted Brown Music. Stop by anytime during the evening (from 4:00-7:00pm) to: talk to a store rep, learn about their rental options, try out an instrument and even take one home. Also, Mr. Osborn will be there to help with any questions. We offer this event as a convenience for our band students and families. Most of our members get their first instrument at this event.
Bring you instrument on the first Friday
You do not need to have your instrument at class for the first three days of school. Try to have an instrument by Friday, Sept. 11 and bring it to class then. Together, we will learn how to safely assemble & hold your instrument. We will then begin on producing sound.
No weekly practice slips! Individual practice is a must to develop and improve playing skills. Students will still be expected to practice at home to prepare their music and playing tests to the best of their abilities.
