Changes to 2011-12 School Calendar
Additional school days added
Students in the Sumner School District lost 4 days of instruction due to weather-related school closures in January. The four school days are scheduled as follows:
- The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up in May
May 25 and May 29, 2012, are now SCHOOL DAYs for all students K-12.
- Two additional make-up days have been added to the last week of school
June 20 and June 21, 2012, are also SCHOOL DAYs for all students K-12. (June 21 is a half-day early dismissal for the last day of school.)
Lakeridge Middle School is a recipient of the 2011 Washington Achievement Award.
Lakeridge is being honored in the Special Recognition category—Closing Achievement Gaps.
The Washington Achievement Awards, sponsored by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, celebrates the state’s top-performing schools and recognizes achievement in multiple categories. This highly selective award is based on our school’s performance on the Achievement Index, a comprehensive measurement of Washington schools’ performance over time.
The Washington Achievement Award is given to elementary, middle, high, and comprehensive schools in eight different categories: overall excellence, overall excellence for gifted programs, and special recognition for outstanding achievement in the following subcategories: language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate (high and comprehensive schools only), improvement, and closing the achievement gap.
The selection process for the Washington Achievement Award is very rigorous, and we take great pride in this accomplishment.

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Lakeridge Family:
Welcome to the middle of May. The sun has arrived. The students are smiling. The teachers are teaching. Life is good at Lakeridge!
As always, this newsletter has lots of information and dates you need. So here we go.
Our LMS Vision Statement includes the following:
Emotionally Safe: Students are currently busy planning the end of the school year activities. There are lots of logistics to work out and they are enjoying the leadership process. There will soon be a list of events that will include annual signing, dance, assemblies, 8th grade trip, band concert, choir concert and art show, integrated performing arts and art show, spirit week, and the Friends of Rachel Food Drive. We most likely missed a few that we will add in the next letter!
Socially Civil: The 20th Annual PTO Hawkshun was an extreme success. Hundreds of parents and community members enjoyed the evening and thousands of dollars were raised to benefit the academic achievement and social growth of Hawk students. The Battle of the Books was a classic battle with our favorite middle school, Lakeridge, bringing home the trophy. Karla Banks, art teacher, and her advisory students raised money for a community service project of replanting winter damaged LMS plants.
Academically Productive:
Lakeridge was the recipient of the 2011 Washington Achievement Award from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Pictured above are Randy Dorn, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Toby Udager, Co-Principal, Jennifer Ireland, Lakeridge Teacher and Building Learning Coordinator, Steve Fulkerson, Co-Principal, and Phyllis “Bunker” Frank, Washington Board of Education. Our special recognition was for closing the achievement gaps. The banner from the state of Washington is proudly displayed in The Commons at LMS!
National Board Input Needed ASAP
As part of Steve Fulkerson’s participation in National Board Certification for Principals, he is requesting that you, and your student, complete a survey of his leadership and the Vision of Lakeridge. Your responses will, of course, be anonymous.
Parents: Your link to the survey is: http://login.chpd.com/login/PAcg2ar/87758
Students: Your link to the survey is: http://login.chpd.com/login/SSjcdmx/87758
The survey closes on May 30 so, as you tell your children, the sooner you do it, the better!
As always, we are just a telephone call or e-mail away.
