Summer School

Elementary Summer Intervention
This program is designed to provide academic assistance to students entering grades 1-5. It is an opportunity to bridge the gap between June and September, helping students retain skills learned throughout the school year, as well as providing additional help with those areas your child may find most challenging. Teachers provide engaging activities focused on reading, writing and math in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. We look forward to working with your student as they endeavor to enhance these important academic skills.

Who should attend summer school?
Students who are not meeting standards in reading, writing and/or math should attend the summer school program. District standards for students can be found on the Sumner School District Web site at www.sumner.wednet.edu. This program is available to Sumner School District students only.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedure
Student hours are from 8:30-11:30 am. Please use the front doors of the school for arrival and departure. At the end of class students will be escorted to the front doors and released to their parents or to board the bus. Please be prompt when picking up your child. Students participating in the summer lunch program will be accompanied to the cafeteria door.

Transportation
Limited transportation will be provided. Please indicate on the registration form whether or not your child needs transportation. If you have questions, please contact the Transportation Department at (253) 891-9400.

From the Principal's Desk

We are so proud of our 3rd, 4th and 5th grader Lakers for their outstanding effort with the WASL.  They’ve just completed that multiple day assessment, and the results should be back about the same time school starts.

You’ve no doubt seen and heard news stories about the WASL and some of the changes that have been made to our state’s assessment system. Concerns have been raised about the impact of the WASL as a graduation requirement.   While our Lakers seem to be far away from finishing high school - how does the WASL fit into the future of our children?

Meeting standard (“passing”) the WASL in 10th is currently one requirement students must meet to graduate.  Students have multiple opportunities to take the assessment, and there are some alternatives for those that are unable to meet the standard on the basic WASL.

It is important to keep in mind that there are currently three other State requirements for students to graduate from high school in the Sumner School District.

  • Students must complete a Senior Project to demonstrate their understanding of the connection between school and the world beyond the high school campus.
  • They must develop a High School and Beyond plan that is developed over the four years of high school in the advisory system.
  • Students must pass required classes and earn credits including English, math, science, Washington State history, social studies and other areas.  Failing to earn enough credits by not passing classes is the single biggest reason students fail to graduate.

While the WASL is an important piece of the graduation puzzle, there are other pieces that are equally important.  It may seem a long way off, but we would do well to “keep our eyes on the prize” as our students move through the educational system.

As always, please call me if you have questions or concerns.

Chuck Eychaner, Principal
