Turn Off All Screens

We missed one of the most important weeks in the year! The Week of April 21 -27 was Turn Off Your TV Week. However, all is not lost.  I believe every family could pick a week and make it their home’s official Turn Off Your TV Week.

The week is designed to remind us that television watching cuts into family time and harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school. On average, children in the United States will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).   In addition, screen watching (TV, video games and computers) contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity in all family members.  With this in mind, turning off your screens is about saving lives.

Pick a week and Turn off those Screens!

Math Questions of the Month

Primary Question (K-2)

Simon had 4 blue marbles, 8 green marbles, 6 red marbles and 9 yellow marbles.  His friend Sarah traded him two special silver marbles for one of each color of his.  How many marbles does Simon have now?

Answer: _________________________________    Name:________________________________

Intermediate question (grades 3 – 5)

Simon had a bunch of old marbles in a drawer.  When he got home from school, he found that his brother had taken a third of them.  Then, his dog rolled half of what was left in his drawer outside and lost them.  He traded six to his neighbor for a candy bar, gave half of what was still left to his friend at school.  After all that he only had only 4 marbles left in his drawer.  How many did Simon start with?
