(Principal Update sent October 5, 2015, via school messages)

Dear Crestwood Families:

Recent surveys have shown that 1 in 10 children in U.S. schools have chronic absenteeism.  Sumner School District has made a conscious decision to focus on attendance this year.  If children do not attend school on a regular basis, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills.  Research has shown that missing too much school, whether excused or unexcused, has negative consequences on academic achievement.  Chronic absence as early as Pre-K can lead to that student being less likely to read proficiently and at grade level when they reach the 3rd grade. Students with excessive absenteeism also miss out on building a habit of good attendance that can carry through high school and college.
