Culminating Senior Project Update
February and March are busy months for the Senior Project. Several components of the senior project will be due! All seniors should begin working on their project hours as soon as possible.
Deadlines in February include the mentor credential letter, portfolio cover sheet, and the research paper rough draft.
The research paper is a major component of the senior project. Research seminars are being held during English classes both first and second semester to help students write their thesis statement and to begin their papers. The BLHS Writing Center is also available for those seniors needing additional assistance.
March brings more deadlines including the final draft of the research paper and mentor check #1. Any seniors who are behind on their project will be assigned to come to school at 7:35 AM on the scheduled WASL late start days March 10th – 13th. Seniors need to give copies of all papers to their advisors and keep the originals for themselves to put in their final portfolio that is due May 2nd.
Additional help for the culminating senior project can be found from a senior’s faculty advisor, from the BLHS Writing Center, or from the Senior Project Coordinator, Traci Lewis, who is located in the LRC. Seniors may also stay after school to work on their project. The computer lab and the LRC are open almost every day from 2:20 to 3:30.
The next evening Running Start meeting for seniors will be on Thursday, February 7 at 6:00 PM.
Please feel free to contact Traci Lewis should you have any questions or concerns regarding the senior project at 891-5719.
Just a reminder for seniors and their parents; Successful completion of the culminating senior project is a graduation requirement!
Please contact Traci Lewis, Senior Project Coordinator, with any questions.

Culminating Senior
Project
The Senior Project is a graduation requirement and a culminating
demonstration of a student’s achievement of the state and
district learning goals, namely critical thinking, reading comprehension,
and effective communication. Seniors are expected to demonstrate
self-directed learning by selecting a topic of genuine interest
and managing time well. Please ask your student about these tasks
and forms and encourage them as they embark on this final challenge
of their high school year. The project components consist of the
following;
- The Research and Paper: Research the subject
through a variety of sources and prepare a typed 5-8 page research
paper.
- The Project and Mentor: Complete a minimum
15 hour project with the help of an adult mentor. This learning
experience is obtained outside of the school day, during second
semester, and reported on in reflective journals.
- The Portfolio: Evidence of student’s
learning both during the Senior Project and throughout high school.
- The Senior Board Presentation: An 8 –
10 minute speech illustrating learning over time which is made
to a board of judges.
