“Advocacy”
Advisory System
The BLHS advisory system is called “Advocacy.” Students
meet with their Advocacy teachers approximately every other Wednesday
for 45 minutes after 2nd period. Through the Advocacy program students
work on various components of their “Senior Culminating Portfolio”
as well as their “High School and Beyond Plan.” During
the spring students are guided by their assigned Advocacy teachers
each time they select classes and register for the next semester.
Attention is paid to graduation requirements, college prep courses,
and courses which provide the skills for entry into apprenticeships
or the work force.
Anger Management Group
In a confidential environment, explore with other student participants
what might be one’s anger triggers. Learn ways to recognize
those triggers and develop coping mechanisms to better manage them.
Interested students should contact their guidance counselor.
ASVAB Testing
Juniors have also had the opportunity to take the ASVAB (Armed Services
Vocational Aptitude Battery) at Bonney Lake High School. This test
aids in determining aptitude and interests for hundreds of career
possibilities in both civilian jobs and military positions. The
ASVAB is offered in both the fall and spring semester.
Beyond High School
This annual event is an education fair designed to fit the needs
of all students and their parents. Every November, the Beyond High
School event hosts representatives from nearly every 4-year and
2-year colleges. The location of this education fair alternates
annually between both Bonney Lake and Sumner High School. Vocational
and Technical schools are also represented. Armed Service Recruiters
are in attendance and other career alternatives after high school
are also present. Students and parents can also obtain vital information
on financial aid, scholarships and much more during various interest
sessions during this event.
Boys & Girls State
See a U.S. History teacher or counselor regarding the social studies
department selecting students for Boys State and Girls State Congress
held each summer. The local Rotary Club and the Sumner Teachers
Association pay for two women and two men to attend. Girls State
is the second week in June and Boys State is the third week in June,
both are held at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. The
American Legion hosts the conference so that 400+ students can act
out the legislative process involved in proposing and enacting laws
that are crucial to Washington State.
College Visitations
It’s never too early to visit a college campus. Check in the
CIC for information and dates of upcoming the college visitations.

Coordination of Services for Students with Disabilities
This is an important resources for parents who Post-Secondary and
college accommodation planning for students with disabilities. For
more information request an appointment with the BLHS school psychologist.
Financial Aid Information Night
This is the financial aid workshop that is designed for both parents
and students. As such, it is held in the evening and includes instructions
on how to fill in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or
FAFSA. Paying for College Night will typically be held in January
at the high school. You may download a FAFSA and bring to the meeting
with you by going online to this address: www.fafsa.ed.gov
Financial Aid Workshop
How will you pay for your education? This workshop will cover all
financial aid sources for all kinds of education following high
school graduation. This is held during the day for students typically
in December. Parents are invited to a follow-on workshop typically
held in January.
Grade Level Classroom Guidance Presentations
This is a series of presentations held in early September by the
counselors of Bonney Lake High School. Our intent is to welcome
back all students and inform them of opportunities and resources
available to them regardless of their grade. Some of the topics
include; How to get involved, important dates, graduation requirements,
and other resources available to them.
Medical Rotation
This course is offered at Franklin Pierce High School. Students
are responsible for their own transportation. Periods 1 & 2
or 3 & 4 all year (3 Credits). This year-long program offers
qualified seniors an opportunity to observe a variety of medical
careers in setting such as local hospitals, health care facilities
and offices. Students will become familiar with as many different
phases of health care as possible, including;
Surgery, Veterinarian, Pharmacy, Nursery, Children’s Therapy
Unit, Labor & Delivery, Emergency Room, Chiropractor, Laboratory.
PSAT/ SAT Training
Learning the strategies to taking a standardize test can help to
improve a student’s score. Bonney Lake guidance department
offers a two period length training session on the PSAT. This session
is offered in October and is held just a few weeks before the PSAT
is taken. The PSAT is most often taken by Juniors, but there are
usually some spots available for Sophomores as well. In addition,
the techniques learned in the training session can be very helpful
when the SAT is taken later in the year.
ROTC Program
Juniors interested in applying to any of the military ROTC programs
upon graduation are encouraged to start by picking up a candidate
packet from the local recruiting office in March of the junior year.
Running Start
This is a program that allows juniors and seniors to enroll in courses
at community or technical colleges either full time or on a part
time basis. Eligibility is based on G.P.A. as well as a placement
test given by the colleges. Both college credit and high school
credit is earned for courses taken at the college. Although tuition
is paid by the District, the student is responsible for books, fees,
and transportation. Students interested should attend a Academic
Options Night held in March for Sophomores. Classes begin in Autumn
of a student’s Junior year.
Scholarships, Spotlite/Community Scholarship Application
The “Senior Prowler” is printed about every 4 weeks
and notifies you of scholarships available and college visits. A
copy is given to each of your senior teachers for posting. You can
pick up your own copy of future publications in the CIC. The Community
Scholarship Application allows seniors to complete just one application
to apply for over 40 local scholarships that only Sumner School
District students will be awarded (over $50,000.00 each year).
Senior College Admission Workshop
This workshop is typically held in October. It covers application
process, deadlines for most schools, the common application for
4-year private schools and tips on how to write college essays.
More information is provided for folks planning to attend a 4-year
or 2-year college in the state of Washington.
Technical College Admissions Workshop
This event typically takes place in March. Announcements in 2nd
Semester will provide the exact dates. Representatives from Clover
Park Technical College and Bates Technical College will be at the
high school. Find out about the admissions process and application
deadlines for these technical colleges.
