Directions

Community Scholarship Deadline is March 07, 2008 by 3:00 p.m.

1. If you have not already asked a teacher or other significant adult in your life to write a letter of recommendation for you, consider doing so now. Allow at least two weeks for the completed letter of recommendation. The “Letter of Recommendation Request Form,” available in the Career and Information Center (CIC), can help you with this step.

2. Review the scholarship requirements for each scholarship to determine your eligibility. Mark all scholarships you are interested in being considered for and for which you are applying, on the Interest Form in the back. This form must be turned in to the CIC when you turn in your completed applications.

3. At the beginning of second semester request a copy of your updated transcript through the CIC.

4. Apply once for all scholarships by completing one Standard Application, attaching a copy of your transcript and Letter of Recommendation and your completed Scholarship Interest Form. Turn in your application to the CIC.

5. Type or word-process your applications. REMINDER: The Standard Application form is available online and can be completed on and printed directly from any computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Word. The web address is on the front of this booklet. Print each page as you complete it, as you cannot save the completed form.

6. Staple all forms together (no paper clips, folders, covers, sleeves, binders, etc.) in the following order:

  • Application Form
  • Letter/s of recommendation
  • Transcript
  • Scholarship Interest Form

7. Return completed applications to the CIC no later than Friday, March 07, 2008 by 3:00 p.m. Include the “Scholarships Interest Form” at the end of this booklet, or we will not know which scholarships you wish to be considered for!!! NO late applications will be accepted. LAST-MINUTE COMPUTER MALFUNCTIONS ARE NO EXCUSE; PLAN AHEAD! Scholarship recipients will be notified in mid- to late May. Due to the volume of applications, it is not possible to notify students who applied but were not selected for a scholarship. All recipients of scholarship will be invited to the Senior Awards Night on June 05, 2008. Students are welcome to see the CIC secretary if they have any questions during the process.

Local Scholarships Tips and Information

All scholarships in this book use the Standard Application Form and it is permissible to make copies of your original application to use for all scholarships using the Standard Application. If using the online fill-in Adobe Acrobat form vs. the printed form, you can complete your application online, print it out, then make changes such as changing the name of the Scholarship on the form for subsequent applications, and then print this out. This is the most efficient way to apply for multiple scholarships. You may want to complete and print one page of the application at a time, or save the application on your home computer as you work.

Scholarship donors expect a neat and complete application. The donors have often devoted many hours toward fund raising to finance their scholarship and they expect to see quality work from the applicant when completing the scholarship application.

Bonney Lake High School adheres to a philosophy of recognizing as many deserving seniors as possible. There are more deserving students than there are available scholarships; therefore, the attempt is made to distribute scholarships to the greatest number of qualified applicants.

Some scholarship donors will request an interview. Applicants will be notified through the CIC indicating the time and location of these interviews. The quality of your Statement of Purpose on the Standard Application is of the UTMOST importance. Do not state that your
goal is to graduate from high school. It is assumed from your application that you plan to graduate!

In most cases, scholarships are not granted solely on financial need.

All students in need of financial aid for college attendance should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA- online at www.fafsa.ed.gov) and any forms required by the specific college/institution.

Local scholarships are usually for one year only and are not renewable. Recipients of scholarships must use the money in the academic year following their graduation and preferably be enrolled throughout that following year.

Scholarship funds are mailed to the Financial Aid Office of the college/institution indicated on the recipient’s acceptance card. IF THE RECIPIENT CHANGES HIS/HER CHOICE OF INSTITUTION OR FAILS TO ENROLL, THE SCHOLARSHIP DONOR AND THE BLHS CIC MUST BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY.

Scholarship funds may be used for any program administered by the educational institutions unless otherwise stated.

Scholarships are announced at the annual Senior Awards Night. Recipients will be asked to attend this reception, which will be held June 05, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the BLHS Commons. We do our best to post accurate and up-to-date information in this booklet. Occasionally, actual awards may vary-either higher or lower- than the amounts stated in the booklet.

Recipients will be notified how to receive their funds either through the donor directly or through the CIC. All recipients will receive a letter from the CIC encouraging them to immediately write a thank you note. Thank you notes must be completed and mailed to the donor no later than June 10, 2008.

How To Improve Your Application For Local Scholarships

Read all directions before you start filling out forms or asking questions.

Follow the directions carefully and completely.

Neatness counts! Use the online form or type your application.

Do not use report covers or other “fancy” bindings.

Staple your pages together; do not use paper clips.

The quality of your Statement of Purpose on the Standard Application is of the utmost importance. State your plans for employment and post high school education. It is certainly acceptable to be imaginative and creative. At the same time, don’t forget the basics. Take time to be sure your spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc., are correct. While it is a good idea to allow another person to review your statement, the basic ideas and writing must be your own.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! The stress of wondering if you’ll meet a deadline is unhealthy and unnecessary. No late applications will be accepted, even if caused by computer malfunctions. Plan ahead. If your application packet is not complete by the deadline, you will not be considered. Be sure to follow up on other scholarship opportunities from the college you have selected, your employer, your parents’ employers, and any clubs or affiliations you have.
