Changes to 2011-12 School Calendar: Extension of First Semester
Because of last week's emergency school cancellations, students lost a week of instruction, practice and review before end-of-semester testing. To provide students and teachers with adequate time for instruction and assessment, first semester is extended by one week. This means first semester ends on February 6 and the student waiver day for professional development-grading/flex day is moved from January 30 to February 6.

  • January 30: SCHOOL DAY for all students K-12.

  • February 3: Last day of middle and high schools' first semester.

  • February 6: NO SCHOOL for all students K-12.

  • February 7: First day of middle and high schools' second semester.

Changes to 2011-12 School Calendar: Snow Make-Up Days
At this time there have been 4 days of school closure due to weather. The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up in May.

  • May 25 and May 29: SCHOOL DAYs for all students K-12

The additional 2 make-up days have not yet been scheduled.

Highly Capable Program Nominations
Each school year, Sumner School District accepts nominations of students in grades 2-5 whose educational needs might be best served by the District’s Highly Capable Program.

Students identified as highly capable in grades 3-5 are served in a self-contained “all day” program housed at Daffodil Valley Elementary. At the middle school level, students attend Lakeridge Middle School and their program includes social studies, language arts, math and science.

Nomination Period: January 4 – 31, 2012

Nomination forms are available at all elementary and middle schools and online.

Kindergarten Registration Information
The Sumner School District offers full-time and part-time kindergarten classes. Part-time students attend school all day on Mondays, Tuesdays and alternating Wednesdays (red kindergarten) OR all day on Thursdays, Fridays and alternating Wednesdays (blue kindergarten).

Some elementary schools offer a tuition-based, full-time program on a space available basis. Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade.

Full-time Kindergarten Rates
Registration Deposit (applied to June tuition): $100
Full Pay Monthly Tuition: $325

All children enrolling for kindergarten for the coming school year must be five years old by August 31, prior to the start of school. When registering a child for school, families should bring:

  • Proof of child’s birth date (birth or hospital certificate, passport);
  • Immunization information and child’s health history; and
  • Names and phone numbers of parents, physician, and an emergency contact.

Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information, or download a packet from the District Web site. Completed registration forms should be returned to the neighborhood school.

Skylert Notifications
The District and all schools now have capability to send notifications about attendance, general messages and emergency alerts by phone, e-mail or text messages. All families should log on to Family Access to update their contact information and select preferred messages. Families will choose the phone number to which general and emergency messages will be sent (home, work or cell phone), with additional options for the message to also be sent by e-mail or text.

Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather brings road and driving conditions that might result in school delays or closures. Safety for your child is our primary concern. When winter weather impacts specific areas of the district, Limited Bus Transportation service areas may be announced. We try to make information available about school closure or changes to the school schedule by 5 a.m. Families should remember to check the Web site or call the District Hotline at 891.6001 for updated information about school operations.

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Viking Families:

As we roll into the month of February, great things continue to happen at BLE. We are pleased with the progress students are making in reading and math as measured by the Winter MAP assessment.   We are also making great strides connecting learning activities to our new technology in our building. Be sure to ask your student(s) about the Mobi's and laptops in their classrooms and how they are using them to practice math and reading skills.

Please take a moment to mark the following events and changes on your calendars:

Student Waiver Day
Monday, February 6

Because of the emergency school cancellations last month, the student waiver day scheduled for January 30, was moved to February 6. Staff will be using this non-student day for important professional development in the area of technology and using data to design intervention opportunities for students.

Half-Day Early Dismissal on Thursday, February 16
Students will be released from school at 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, February 16. Child Nutrition will be providing sack lunches for students that wish to order one. It will be the same price as their regular school lunches. The lunch will include: Turkey and cheese hoagie, applesauce cup, orange, carrot packet, chips, Rice Krispie treat and milk. Please mark your calendars for this early release date and order your student a sack lunch on the green slip sent home this week by the classroom teacher.

President's Day Weekend
Also, please note the following dates related to President's Day Weekend.
Half Day - Thursday, Feb. 16 (release time is 11:40 a.m.)
No School Friday, Feb 17
No School February, 20

Viking Family Activity Night
February 23

We are very excited about our up and coming Viking Family Pizza & Activity Night on February 23 from 5:00 pm. to 7:00 pm. We hope you will be able to attend this fun and free event for the whole family! On this evening, families will be able to enjoy a free pizza dinner and attend a variety of activities around our school. Families will visit their child's classroom as well as other grade levels to play math and reading games. There will be opportunities for you to check out our internet-based IXL math and RAZ Kids reading programs.   We have also arranged for a special visit from Lakeridge Middle School teacher Sean McNally, who will give 5th graders a glimpse into 6th grade math games. He will also be available to answer questions. Lori Sjolund from READY will have several hands-on activities for our future Vikings birth to 5 years old and will be available to give you great information about the READY program. Along with fun, we will have prizes and free drawings throughout the evening as well. We hope you will make a point to attend this fun and informative evening at BLE.

Thanks again for all your support as we SAIL at Bonney Lake Elementary,

Sandy Miller, Principal
