Interested in Volunteering?

Volunteers make the impossible possible!

The Sumner School District welcomes and encourages parents and community members to actively participate in student learning through volunteering in schools and the Recreation Department. The community-teacher-student-family relationship is an important part of ensuring success for all students, every day.

All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application using the Sumner School District online Employment Application system.

Background checks will be conducted on all adults working with students as part of the application process.

To apply as a volunteer, please complete the following steps.  The process should take approximately twenty minutes to complete.

  • Fill out the online application. Please be sure to complete your profile and checklist.
  • Complete the items in the checklist, including the mandatory disclosure.
  • A State Patrol background check is conducted on all volunteer applicants.
  • Once approved, all volunteers must annually reapply to volunteer.

If you need help scanning documents to upload or access to a computer, please call Human Resources at 253.891.6025, or stop by the front counter for personalized help 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thanks so much for your willingness to serve the students of the Sumner School District!

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know when my volunteer application is being considered?

As soon as you complete your registration you are an active applicant in our system. However, you must complete each of the required items in My Checklist to ensure that your application is complete and receives consideration, even if you have volunteered in the past. My Checklist indicates which items are complete or still required.

How can I change my name, address or telephone number?

Click on My Profile to update your personal information. Make your changes and click Save at the bottom of the page to save changes you make. You can change this information at any time.

How long is my volunteer application kept on file?

Once your application is created it is maintained in our electronic online application system. An application is moved to an "inactive" status if it has not been updated within the past twelve (12) months. Your application is considered updated any time you update information and/or complete a requirement.

May I apply for more than one type of volunteer at a time?

Yes. You can apply for as many volunteer types as you are qualified for. Some volunteer programs have limited space so not all applicants may be approved.

How will I be notified if I am approved to be a volunteer?

You will be sent an email letting you know that your application has been accepted and approved. Depending on your email settings you may need to check your spam or junk folders. If you have not heard anything within 48 hours you can email us at

Why do you require a copy of my valid Driver's License?

We require a valid driver’s license in order to run a background check on all volunteers.

How long does a volunteer approval last and am I automatically approved for next year too?

Your volunteer approval lasts for the school year and/or sport season only. You will need to visit your application and complete any new requirements in order to be approved for the next school year.

I am an approved volunteer. Does that mean that I can drive students to/from events?

No. Transportation is not an approved volunteer duty, even if you have the parent’s permission.

I have had some trouble in the past. Does that mean I can't be approved to volunteer?

Not necessarily. Each application is taken on a case by case basis. It is important to be completely honest and forthcoming.
