The Sumner School District’s Native American Education Program
provides academic assistance, advocacy and resource referral for Native
American students and families with Native background. The program is
run through a partnership with the Puget Sound Educational Service District
and has two main focuses: A Title VII Reading Program that works to increase
the reading levels for struggling students (K-12), and a college prep
program that works with high school students and their families to ensure
they are meeting the requirements to enter a post-secondary program.
Monthly Family Night
The Native American Education Program holds a monthly family night for
parents, students and community members to gather. Family nights will
be potluck-style, with arts and crafts for kids, and allow parents/guardians
to meet other Native American parents/guardians in the district. Some
months will include a Native American movie, games, drumming and storytelling.
What services does the coordinator provide?
The coordinator tracks Native American students’ grades, attendance
and behavior. They also are in regular contact with students and have
a cooperative relationship with teachers and parents. Coordinators may
be called on by parents, teachers or students to serve as a resource on
cultural awareness in the classroom, provide home visits, assess students
reading skills and provide a plan for improvement.
Who is eligible for services?
To be eligible for the program services, a student must
- complete the Indian Certification Form (form 506), filled out at your
child’s school and then given to the coordinator in your district
