| This Parent Guide is designed
to highlight student grade-level expectations. These expectations
have been aligned with the Washington State Essential Academic Learning
Requirements (EALRs) and the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). These
expectations provide specific learning standards for students in
grades K-10. They clarify the skills and strategies all students
need to demonstrate proficiency in each content area.
Additionally, the assessments used to determine student achievement
are outlined as follows for reading, writing, and math.
Reading
In first grade, students apply concepts of print, phonological and
phonemic awareness, oral language skills, and phonics. They continue
to expand their reading vocabulary and demonstrate comprehension
by participating in a variety of responses. Students choose and
read a variety of books for pleasure.

Writing
In first grade, writers are able to develop an idea or item of information
by adding some details of description or explanation. Although phonetic
spelling is common, there is a marked increase in the number of
words spelled accurately. As understanding of revising and editing
develops, the overall accuracy of writing increases.
Conventions of punctuation, directionality, spacing, and letter
formation ensure work is legible.

the relative values of numbers. Students understand subtraction
as separating or undoing addition and expand their understanding
of numbers through application of basic addition and subtraction
facts. Students read a clock, work with two-dimensional figures
and use nonstandard units to measure. They also develop their understanding
of statistics by organizing and interpreting data. They recognize
and describe simple repeating and growing patterns to develop their
algebraic sense.

Glossary
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)
The DRA helps teachers pinpoint students' strengths and reading
abilities in a one-on-one conference.
Six Trait Writing
In the Sumner School District six distinct traits of writing are
taught. First graders are assessed on the first three traits*:
* Ideas
When ideas are strong, the message is clear and easy to follow.
Things make sense because the writer includes detail.
* Organization
Organization is the structure of writing. A writer with strong
organization stays focused on the main idea. They have a sense
of sequencing and the reader sees a distinct beginning, middle,
and end.
* Conventions
Conventions include spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalization.
Voice
Voice is the uniqueness of each writer. Voice lets the reader
know the writer is personally engaged in the topic and is aware
that they are communicating with an audience.
Word Choice
Word Choice paints a picture in the reader’s mind. Word
Choice includes recognizing overused words and using descriptive
language.
Sentence Fluency
Sentence Fluency is the rhythm and flow of the language. Sentences
vary in length and style.
