Raising Standards

Raising Standards in the Elementary Program 2007-2008

The Sumner School District Board of Directors has approved setting standards for what students should know and be able to do as they move from grade to grade.

The purpose of the standards is to raise expectations for student performance, clearly state expectations, and ensure that our students develop a strong foundation of basic skills. This will make sure our students meet the increased requirements for high school graduation. In addition, they will have the tools necessary to follow through with their plans after high school.
Students who meet these standards have a reasonable expectation of success at the next grade level with continued effort, work completion, and good attendance. Students will receive information from teachers that show progress toward meeting the goals. Grade promotion and retention will largely be based upon results of these expectations.

Achieving Success
Students at risk of not meeting expectations will be provided the opportunity to participate in extended learning activities, such as summer school and before and/or after school programs. A fee may be charged.
