Position openings can be viewed by employees in their First Class e-mail Desktop. Open the Professional Opportunities folder. Apply for a specific posted position using the In-District Online application program. When openings occur, positions are posted electronically as well as in all schools and District buildings. In accordance with the respective collective bargaining agreements, all openings are posted for a specified period of time. Any qualified District employee making timely application for a position will receive priority consideration.
Outside Application
Complete and submit the appropriate online application. For guaranteed consideration, materials must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than the closing date noted on the position announcement. All submitted hard copy documents are scanned into your online application. It is preferable to submit your documents on regular 20 pound paper. Application Process
After the closing date of the posting, all applications are screened. Following the screening, selected applicants will be invited to interview. When the interviews are completed, the administrator in charge will make a recommendation to Human Resources. Any offer of employment by the District’s Board of Directors is on a conditional basis:
- Pending Sumner School District Board approval.
- Pending completion of a State and Federal Background fingerprint background check at the employee expense, as well as a current written disclosure of specified criminal convictions and civil or disciplinary board findings.
- Pending receipt of appropriate OSPI Washington State Sexual Misconduct Disclosure Release form(s) from all former school district employer(s).
- Pending successful completion of a preplacement physical test at the District expense (custodial applicants recommended for positions only).
- Pending completion of a skills test prior to interviewing (office staff applicants only). Human Resources will contact you to schedule the testing.
- Pending passing a basic skills test with a score of 80 percent or better (paraeducators and substitute paraeducators only). This is not a timed test, but expect the test to take approximately two hours. Human Resources will contact you to schedule the testing.
- Pending pre-employment controlled substances testing, as mandated by and in accordance with Federal Highway Administration rules (CDL driving position applicants only).
Applying for a Coaching Position
Substitute Teaching
If you are familiar with our district you will know that we take great pride in the quality of our students, programs and staff. It means a great deal to us to know that when we have a “need” there is a well qualified teacher to serve as a substitute. Please read carefully the general information outlined below as your application materials will provide important information for our substitute placement process.
- Certificated Substitute
Complete the online application for Certificated Substitute and attach your online application to the Certificated Substitute posting. Bring your original teaching certificate to the Human Resources Department to be registered in our district.
- Emergency Substitute
We are looking for qualified adults with these qualifications to be emergency-certified to be substitute teachers:
Have a BA degree from a university,
Have experience with children and youth in other settings,
Are willing to pay for the mandatory fingerprinting.
Complete the online application for Emergency Substitute and attach your online application to the Emergency Substitute posting. You will be contacted by Human Resources to schedule an interview. If that is successful, then we will help you with the procedures and requirements to obtain the emergency substitute certificate for the State of Washington.

90-Day Requirements
Sumner School District requires that all new employees possess certification in First Aid and CPR or commitment to obtain within ninety (90) days of hire, attend an in-district chemical hazard and bloodborne pathogens orientation, and complete the online training, “What Every Employee Must Be Told.” Board policy prohibits smoking or any other use of tobacco products on school district property, to include all district buildings, grounds and district-owned vehicles.
