| Helping kids succeed is what
the Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation is all about. Created
in 2001 by local business, education and community leaders, the
Foundation’s purpose is to raise funds to support student
scholarships and enrichment programs. More important still, the
Foundation distributes funds locally – people just like you
have already contributed to this important cause. In turn, your
generous support provides vital financial resources for deserving
kids from our community.
Why does the Foundation support student scholarships?
Today, more than ever before, students attending a four-year university,
community college or technical/vocational program pay a larger share
of their tuition and expenses. Additionally, there are fewer options
for scholarships and financial aid, leaving many students and their
families with a difficult financial burden. That’s why the
Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation has partnered with the national
organization, Dollars for Scholars Scholarship America www.wadollarsforscholars.org.
Together, we can make more funds available to local students and
are able to direct financial aid to graduates of Sumner and Bonney
Lake High schools. Since 2001, the Foundation has awarded over $200,000
in scholarships.
The Foundation annually awards:
- Kathryn Dalton Teacher Scholarship to a future teacher ($500)
- Eileen Leighton Beaulieu Scholarship for a student pursuing
a career to help children ($500)
- Sunset Chev Automotive Scholarship to a student pursuing a career
in the automotive industry ($3,600)
- Luke Voiles Memorial Scholarship to a student with an outstanding
high school soccer and academic success ($500)
- Joe Eben Corliss Scholarship to a student entrepreneur ($10,000)
- Arts and Music to a student studying art, music or journalism
($500)
- Additional vocationals and academic scholarships (varied amounts)
The Foundation also partners with other organizations to give
scholarships. Each year, $13,500 in scholarships are awarded in
partnership with the Sumner Rotary Club.
What are enrichment programs and why are they supported?
Enrichment programs enhance the classroom experience, providing
vital support that isn’t covered by the school district’s
state-funded budget.
Examples of enrichment programs are scientists and artists in residence,
specialized equipment, machinery or computers, new teacher grants,
mentoring programs, support for at-risk studentsnd Challenge Day
at Bonney Lake High School.
The Arts Fund supports a variety of arts programs throughout the
District. Field trips and annual Arts Walks are examples of supported
projects.
The Science Fund enhances instruction.
Who operates the Foundation?
The Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation is operated by a volunteer
board of directors. Composed of community and business leaders,
the group manages the Foundation’s investments, raises funds
to provide additional financial resources, selects grant recipients
and awards scholarships.
