October 2009 Roll of Honor

The Washington State Association of Supervision and Curriculum Developers (ASCD) selected John Norlin, Sumner High School, as the Outstanding Young Educator Award of the year. He is now under consideration for national recognition. This award acknowledges John's contribution to education, his impact on students and student learning and achieving excellence and equity in teaching and learning.  A peer teacher nominated him for this prestigious award.

The Association endeavors to honor young professional educators who:

  • Educate the whole child, helping to ensure each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
  • Demonstrate educational leadership in their school, district, and community.
  • Show a positive impact on student achievement.
  • Illustrate significant contributions to the education community.

At last week's State ASCD Conference John accepted his award and a check for $2000.  Superintendent Gil Mendoza, Principal Bill Gaines, Assistant Principals Jeff Baines and Brandon Bakke, teacher Janine Sather, secretary Jamie Voiles and Executive Director Erin LaVerdiere attended the presentation.

ASCD recognizes each honoree and supports opportunities for leadership skill building, professional development, and exchange of ideas among honorees. The national winner and state honorees will form a cadre of exceptional young educators who, throughout the upcoming year, may have opportunities to model, network, and share their best practices with one another and the ASCD community.
