SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE: Shooting at Marysville Pilchuck High School

October 24, 2014

On behalf of Sumner School District - our love, support and prayers go out to the staff, students and families of Marysville Pilchuck High School. The tragedy of a sudden school shooting can make us feel very vulnerable, particularly when innocent children are targeted.

Please know that we take safety in our buildings very seriously; the well-being of our students is our top concern. We have building emergency preparedness plans developed in coordination with our local police and fire departments. ¬†Emergency Response Guides are available in common areas and classrooms across the District.

In preparation for school on Monday, principals are reviewing school safety plans with staff and working with school guidance counselors to provide emotional support for students. Teachers and school staff will continually watch for signs of students who may be in need of additional support.

The National Association of School Psychologists has developed guidelines to assist parents in supporting children in dealing with death and grief.  This document is available at all schools, and is linked here.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.  It takes parents, students, staff and community working together to keep our schools safe places to learn.

To learn more about how our schools stay prepared for emergencies, please visit Emergency Preparedness section on the Sumner School District Web site.
